ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The sequence of courses for youth and adults strengthen the participant's capabilities to serve their community. In general, small groups of participants, working with the assistance of a tutor, meet together in an atmosphere of joy, calm and meditative serenity to engage in close study of the course materials. By studying these courses, they gain the spiritual insights and the practical skills needed to move forward on the path of service together.
As the participants advance from one course to the next, their capacity to carry out increasingly complex acts of service grows. All along, they are accompanied by their tutor and, in time, they naturally come to accompany friends with less experience. From the start, they are all protagonists of personal and social transformation, eagerly assuming responsibility for their own learning and for service to the community.
The sequence of courses has been developed by the Ruhi Institute with the purpose of increasing the capacity of youth and adults to serve their community. The content and order of the courses are based on a series of acts of service, the practice of which creates capacity in the individual to meet the exigencies of dynamic, developing communities. These acts of service are intended to establish a dynamic pattern of action that will lead to the sound development of local communities. This pattern of action involves the establishment of devotional meetings, a program of home visits, children’s classes, junior youth groups and study circles for youth and adults.
Junior youth between the ages of 11 to 15 are living a crucial period of their life. They are no longer children but they have not reached the fullness of youth. During this period, a number of powers of the mind develop in junior youth such as an acute sense of justice and the capacity to analyse their surroundings. With the advent of technology, globalisation, and the global environmental crisis amongst other things, junior youth are asking themselves fundamental questions regarding existence and want to discover their talents in order to help the world. At times they will be shy or courageous, they will say they want to be alone when in reality they are looking for support. These behaviours are temporary, but their vision of the world and the talents they will have developed will stay with them for life.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The junior youth empowerment program strives to equip young people with a profound understanding of their own potential. It aims to enhance the power of expression of junior youth, it helps them develop moral capabilities and to plan and put in action service projects with their friends for their community. With the help of more experienced animators, they can develop the necessary tools to combat negative social forces like apathy, discrimination or materialism.
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
All the educational materials are concerned with developing language skills and the power of expression. Some also address mathematical concepts and social issues, while others seek to prepare young people to approach the investigation of physical, social and ethical reality in a scientific manner
OUR CONCEPTION OF EDUCATION
The program for the spiritual education of children is based on the conviction that every person is a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. All children have qualities and talents that can be developed. Every one of them can grow up to become a valuable member of society and contribute to the betterment of the world. The role of education is to reveal these gems and enable humankind to benefit from them.
A complete education must allow children to develop their physical powers and their health, their intellectual and artistic capacities, their social abilities and their spiritual qualities. It is on the latter that the program for the spiritual education of children focuses.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Each lesson explores a spiritual quality through a quote from the Bahá’í Writings accompanied by songs, stories, games and artistic activities. Below are some examples of these qualities and the quotes used for each:
Love
“O Friend! In the garden of thy heart plant naught but the rose of love.”
Justice
“Tread ye the path of justice, for this, verily, is the straight path.”
Truthfulness
“Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues.”
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
The lessons of the program are drawn from the third book in the sequence of courses designed by the Ruhi Institute, the study of which also serves as training for those who wish to serve as children’s class teachers.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Our tutorial spaces work to enhance the intellectual abilities of young people as they finish elementary school and continue through their high school studies. Our efforts complement the Quebec school curriculum, with a focus on french and mathematics. We aim to strengthen academic commitment and performance while building capabilities to contribute to the wellbeing of the community. These more formal tutoring spaces are for students from grade 4 to secondary 2.
We also offer homework help for students in the higher grades of high school, secondary 3-5. This space allows them to get help with the various work they are given as well as studying for their exams.
These spaces are offered in collaboration with another local non-governmental organization called Wordswell Association for Community Learning.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The wellbeing and prosperity of families and the development of the community are interdependent. The family unit is the nucleus of human society – a space within which spiritual qualities, moral consciousness, and capacities essential to the betterment of the world are developed. The habits and patterns of conduct nurtured within the family are carried into the workplace, into the local community, into the social and political life of the country, and into the arena of international relations.
In connection with its efforts to support youth, the Neighbourhood Spot Community Centre draws families together for periodic workshops and retreats, providing a joyous, encouraging space to reflect and consult on themes central to supporting children and youth and the wellbeing and progress of the community
